vCard History And Its Origin

Sample of vcard

Vcard is a file format standard for electronic business card. Basically it contains vital information of the person like name, address information, phone numbers, email addresses, URLs, logos, photographs, and audio clips.

NEED FOR VCARD

Vcard is simply the digital form of the business card. It is a powerful new means of personal data interchange (PDI) that is automating the traditional business card. Whether it’s your computer (hand held organizer, Personal Information Manager (PIM), electronic mail application, web browser) or telephone, vcard will revolutionize your personal communications. Available business cards i.e. not digital, have limitations like cards are limited while distributing in an organization, parties etc. , can be destroy (depending on the quality of card), contain limited information, needed to be maintain etc. This type of limitation was removed by the vcard, that’s why vcard is popular and used.

HISTORY OF VCARD

Vcard was originally proposed by versit consortium, a multivendor initiative founded by the Apple computer, AT &T, IBM and Siemens in the early 1990s. In December 1996, ownership of the format was handed over to the Internet Mail Consortium (IMC), a trade association for companies with an interest in internet e-mail. IMC is a defunct organization which claimed to be the only international organization focused on cooperatively managing and promoting the rapidly –expanding world of electronic on the internet mail.

Vcard version 2.1 is widely used by the email-clients. Vcard version 3.0 is an IETF standard track proposal contained in RFC 2425 AND RFC 2426. Version 4.0 is defined in RFC 6350, with a new XML syntax. Vcard file extension commonly is vcf. In Androids phone it sometimes comes as namecard form.
